Graduate Trainee Teacher Programme
Considering a career in teaching? Newham College offers a perfect solution for those worried about training costs. We’re looking for dynamic graduates or experienced professionals passionate about their subject to gain a teaching qualification while working in a paid role at the college.
Our graduate trainee teacher programme allows talented individuals to earn a Level 5 Diploma in Teaching, accredited by Pearson, while working as a paid trainee teacher. This qualification prepares you to teach in post-16 education as a main grade lecturer.
Starting salary: Lecturer Scale Band 1 (Unqualified) £31,130 – £32,482
Closing date: 16 June 2024
Interviews: 20-21 June 2024
Start date: 19th August 2024
The programme lasts two academic years and requires:
- One day of lessons to develop teaching skills.
- Four days of on-site work, including shadowing, co-delivering, and teaching
You’ll work as a Newham College Trainee Teacher with up to 15 hours of timetabled teaching per week in the first year and up to 17 hours in the second year in your specialist subject and across departments. We’re seeking trainees in:
- Engineering
- Science
- Information Technologies/Computing
- Health and Care
- Nursing
- Physics
- Maths
The in-service course prepares you to teach in diverse lifelong learning sectors, including Further Education Colleges, work-based learning, private training companies, adult and community education, and offender learning. Applicants need an initial degree or substantial professional skills, GCSEs in English and Maths at high grade or L2 Functional Skills, and proficient IT skills.
Our stimulating environment is known for widening student participation in a heavily invested area of London. Upon completing your first year and L5 course, you’ll be offered an interview for a permanent teaching role at the college*.
*Please note failure to complete the course or decision not to take up permanent employment in the college if employed as a Graduate Trainee may result in you having to pay a contribution to tutoring costs for the L5 course – up to £2000. You can apply for this course separately as a L5 trainee teacher student without the job role in the college – but to pass this course you will need to have 100 sourced hours of class teaching independently of the college and fund the course independently.
