GCSE Results day!

More than double the GCSE entries deliver strong results across Newham College London and NewVIc Sixth Form Centre
Hundreds secure grades for the first time or improve on past results!
Newham College London has recorded its highest ever number of students sitting or resitting GCSE English and Maths this summer – more than double last year’s entries.
At Newham College, 975 students sat Maths compared with 410 last year, and 954 sat English compared with 499. At NewVIc Sixth Form Centre, 594 students sat Maths and 490 sat English. Together, this makes Newham College London the largest provider of GCSE resits in the borough.
This year’s results show clear progress:
- 382 students who previously had no grade or a U now achieved one.
- 318 students improved on their previous result.
- 488 students secured grades 4–9.
All these students studied GCSEs alongside their main qualifications, balancing the demands of multiple courses. For many, this was a vital second chance to achieve the grades missed at school – and the results speak for themselves.
At Newham College:
- In Maths, 171 students improved on their grade and 195 achieved one for the first time.
- In English, 147 students improved and 187 secured a grade for the first time.
At NewVIc Sixth Form Centre:
- In English, 29% achieved grades 4–9, up from 18.4% last year.
- In Maths, the overall pass rate rose to 16.7%, with higher tier entries reaching an exceptional 91.7%.
Jamie Purser, Principal and CEO of Newham College London, said:
“These results are a testament to the determination of our students and staff. Returning to GCSE study takes courage, particularly when it is undertaken alongside a main programme of study. To see so many achieve – often for the very first time – is inspiring. It highlights the importance of second chances and the opportunities they create.”
Students echoed this message:
- Tahlia (Grade 5 Maths, Grade 7 English): “Try not to get overwhelmed and prioritise yourself and your health.”
- Saiara (Grades 5, 6, 7 across English, Maths and Combined Science): “Keep it up and trust yourself.”
- Abdul (Grade 4 Maths): “I did Maths many times, I took it seriously and put all my hard work in – now I’ve done it.”
Newham College London and NewVIc Sixth Form Centre, now working together as the largest post-16 provider in Newham, continue to play a vital role in raising aspirations and supporting thousands of young people and adults across East London.
