About the course

This course is ideal if you are interested in how engineering shapes the modern world and want to develop the knowledge and skills needed for a career in the engineering and manufacturing sector.

Designed with employers, this two-year course combines classroom learning with a substantial industry placement to help you develop the technical knowledge, practical skills and professional behaviours required to work in engineering environments.

The course provides a strong foundation in engineering principles, problem-solving and modern technologies, preparing you for progression into higher education, apprenticeships or skilled employment.

During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:

  • engineering principles and mathematics
  • mechanical, electrical and electronic systems
  • materials, manufacturing and production processes
  • design, testing and quality assurance
  • health, safety and environmental practices in engineering
  • the use of digital technologies in modern engineering

You’ll also have the opportunity to:

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (or equivalent), including English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above; or successful completion of a related Level 2 qualification (normally at Merit or above, where specified).
  • Initial assessment and interview: You’ll complete any required assessments and attend an interview to confirm the right starting level.
  • Suitability: Positive attitude, strong attendance, and the ability to work safely and professionally with others.
  • English and Maths: Applicants who meet all other requirements but do not yet have the required English or Maths grade may still be considered for a place, on the condition that they study and achieve this qualification alongside their main course. Final decisions are made by the senior course leader.
  • Additional: Minimum 5 GCSEs including English Language, Maths and Science. Strong numeracy and problem-solving skills are recommended for success on this engineering programme.

Progression

Courses:

  • Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering
  • Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) in Engineering or Manufacturing
  • University degrees such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Engineering Design

Other:

  • Higher or Degree Apprenticeships in engineering or manufacturing
  • Employment in roles such as Engineering Technician, Manufacturing Technician or Maintenance Technician
  • Progression into specialist engineering careers across sectors including construction, energy, aerospace and advanced manufacturing
