About the course

Build your scientific knowledge and practical skills with this Level 2 First Certificate in Applied Science. This course is ideal if you enjoyed science at school and want to explore how it applies to real-world settings. You’ll develop a broad understanding of biology, chemistry and physics, while gaining the technical and analytical skills needed for further study or entry-level employment in the science and health sectors.

During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:

  • Chemistry and the applications of chemical substances
  • Biology and health applications of science
  • Physics, energy and the study of the universe (cosmology)

You’ll also have the opportunity to:

  • Carry out scientific measurements, experiments and laboratory investigations
  • Develop your practical, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Complete a one-week work experience placement in a science or health-related setting
  • Apply your scientific knowledge to real-world situations through practical projects
  • Prepare for progression to a Level 3 qualification, apprenticeship or employment in applied science, health or laboratory-based roles

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 4 GCSEs at grades 9–3 (or equivalent), including English and maths at grade 3 or above; or successful completion of a related Level 1 qualification.
  • Initial assessment and interview: You’ll complete an English and maths assessment and take part in an interview to confirm the right starting level for your study programme.
  • English and maths during your course: If you haven’t yet achieved grade 4 in English and/or maths, you’ll continue studying these alongside your main qualification.
  • Suitability: Positive attitude to learning, regular attendance, and the ability to work safely and professionally with others.
  • Placement checks (if required): For courses that include a work placement, a DBS check may be required by the placement provider.
  • GCSE Science at grade 3 (Double Award 3/3) preferred.
