Start your journey into the care sector with this practical Level 1 course in Health and Social Care. You’ll gain an introduction to how care services operate and develop the skills needed to support adults and young people in a range of health and social care settings. The course combines theory and practical learning to help you build confidence, communication skills and an understanding of the values that underpin effective care.
During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:

You’ll also have the opportunity to:
- Gain practical experience through a one-week work placement in a health or social care setting
- Apply your learning through projects, presentations and role play activities
- Be assessed through coursework, observations and written assignments – there are no formal exams
- Take part in enrichment activities such as workshops, debates and community projects
- Receive one-to-one tutorial support and set personal learning targets with your course tutor
- Access support from our SEN team to help you succeed and stay motivated
- Prepare for progression to a Level 2 qualification or an apprenticeship in Health and Social Care

Entry requirements
- GCSE profile: Minimum 4 GCSEs at grades 9–2 (or equivalent), including English and maths at grade 2 or above; or successful completion of a related Entry Level 3 programme.
- Initial assessment: You’ll complete an English and maths assessment so we can confirm the right starting level for your study programme.
- Suitability: A positive attitude to learning, good attendance record and the ability to work with others. For people-facing or presentation-based courses, we also expect good communication and professional personal presentation.
- Ongoing English and maths: You’ll continue to study English and/or maths if you have not yet achieved grade 4.
- Additional checks (where relevant): For courses with work placements (e.g., childcare/health), a DBS check may be required by the placement provider.
