Course content

Begin your journey in Engineering with this practical Level 1 course. You’ll gain a broad introduction to mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering, developing the technical skills, safety awareness and confidence needed to progress into higher-level study, apprenticeships or related careers within the engineering and manufacturing industries.

During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:

  • Health and safety in engineering environments
  • Engineering materials and their applications
  • Cutting, forming and assembling engineering components
  • Electronics design and construction
  • Basic electrical installation and testing
  • Mathematics and science for engineering
  • Computer-aided design (CAD) and technical drawing
  • Mechanical, electrical and motor vehicle maintenance

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 4 GCSEs at grades 9–2 (or equivalent), including English and maths at grade 2 or above; or successful completion of a related Entry Level 3 programme.
  • Initial assessment: You’ll complete an English and maths assessment so we can confirm the right starting level for your study programme.
  • Suitability: A positive attitude to learning, good attendance record and the ability to work with others. For people-facing or presentation-based courses, we also expect good communication and professional personal presentation. Awareness of health and safety and readiness for practical workshop learning.
  • Ongoing English and maths: You’ll continue to study English and/or maths if you have not yet achieved grade 4.
  • Additional checks (where relevant): For courses with work placements (e.g., childcare/health), a DBS check may be required by the placement provider.

This course is free for students aged 16-18. The course fee for adults (19+) is TBC.
