Level 2 Certificate in Childcare
Course content
Build your knowledge and practical skills for a rewarding career in childcare and early years education. This Level 2 course will help you understand how to care for and support children and young people in a range of settings, preparing you for employment or further study at Level 3.
During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:
- Child protection and safeguarding
- Equality, diversity and inclusion in childcare settings
- Communication and teamwork in early years environments
- Supporting positive behaviour and wellbeing
- Planning activities for children and young people
- Childminding and early years care principles
- Intellectual and language development
You’ll also have the opportunity to:
- Complete a two-week work placement in a childcare or early years setting to apply your learning in practice
- Be assessed through assignments, observations, presentations and practical activities — there are no final exams
- Develop your research, planning and communication skills through case studies and creative projects
- Access flexible support, including one-to-one tutorials and additional help from our SEN team
- Take part in enrichment activities such as workshops, educational visits and debates
- Use independent study time (I-Learning) to complete assignments and explore wider reading and research
- Work closely with your tutor to set and review personal learning goals through regular progress reviews
- Prepare for progression to a Level 3 qualification in Childcare, Education or Health and Social Care

Open Events at Newham CollegeEntry requirements
- GCSE profile: Minimum 4 GCSEs at grades 9–3 (or equivalent), including English and maths at grade 3 or above; or successful completion of a related Level 1 qualification.
- Initial assessment and interview: You’ll complete an English and maths assessment and take part in an interview to confirm the right starting level for your study programme.
- English and maths during your course: If you haven’t yet achieved grade 4 in English and/or maths, you’ll continue studying these alongside your main qualification.
- Suitability: Positive attitude to learning, regular attendance, and the ability to work safely and professionally with others.
- Placement checks (if required): For courses that include a work placement, a DBS check may be required by the placement provider.
- Genuine interest in working with children; DBS may be required by placement.

How much will this course cost?
This course is free for students aged 16-18. The course fee for adults (19+) is TBC.
