Course content
Begin your journey in early years education with this practical Level 1 course in Childcare. You’ll develop the essential knowledge and skills needed to support the care and development of young children in a range of early years settings. The course provides an excellent foundation for progressing to higher-level study or employment in childcare and education.
During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:
- Developing a personal progression plan for your future career
- Being organised and managing your time effectively
- Planning a safe and engaging childcare environment
- Providing creative and play-based activities for children
- Supporting children’s emotional and social development
You’ll also have the opportunity to:
- Apply your learning through a one-week work placement in a childcare or early years setting
- Develop practical childcare skills through interactive and creative projects
- Be assessed through coursework, observations, presentations and written assignments – there are no formal exams
- Access additional learning support from our SEN team to help you succeed
- Receive one-to-one tutorial support and set achievable personal learning goals
- Take part in enrichment activities designed to enhance your confidence and teamwork
- Prepare for progression to a Level 2 qualification or apprenticeship in childcare or early years education

Entry requirements
- GCSE profile: Minimum 4 GCSEs at grades 9–2 (or equivalent), including English and maths at grade 2 or above; or successful completion of a related Entry Level 3 programme.
- Initial assessment: You’ll complete an English and maths assessment so we can confirm the right starting level for your study programme.
- Suitability: A positive attitude to learning, good attendance record and the ability to work with others. For people-facing or presentation-based courses, we also expect good communication and professional personal presentation.
- Ongoing English and maths: You’ll continue to study English and/or maths if you have not yet achieved grade 4.
- Additional checks (where relevant): For courses with work placements (e.g., childcare/health), a DBS check may be required by the placement provider.

This course is free for students aged 16-18. The course fee for adults (19+) is TBC.
