About the course
French philosopher Michel Foucault once wrote that “everything is political” — and in many ways, he was right. Politics is about power: who has it, how they use it, and how it can be challenged. This course explores these questions through the study of UK and global political systems, political ideas and current affairs. If you enjoy debate, discussion and critical thinking, Politics will challenge and inspire you.
Key topics include:
- Political participation – democracy, political parties, electoral systems, voting behaviour and the media
- UK Government – the constitution, parliament, the Prime Minister and executive, and relationships between the branches of government
- Political ideas – liberalism, conservatism, socialism and feminism
- Global politics – sovereignty, globalisation, governance, human rights, the environment, regionalism and the European Union
