About the course

This course is ideal if you are creative and want to develop your skills in art, design and visual communication. A Level Art and Design encourages you to explore ideas, experiment with materials and techniques, and develop your own creative style.

During the course, you will investigate a range of artistic approaches and develop both practical and conceptual skills. You will build a portfolio of work that demonstrates creativity, technical ability and personal expression, while learning about the work of influential artists and designers.

The course combines practical studio work with research and critical analysis, helping you develop creative thinking, problem-solving and visual communication skills that are valued in higher education and the creative industries.

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 5 GCSEs at grades 9–5 (or equivalent), including English Language and Maths.
  • Initial assessment and interview: You will attend an interview and may be asked to present examples of your artwork or creative work.
  • Suitability: Creativity, curiosity and a willingness to experiment with materials and ideas.
  • English and Maths: Applicants who meet all other requirements but do not yet have the required English or Maths grade may still be considered for a place, on the condition that they study and achieve this qualification alongside their main course. Final decisions are made by the senior course leader.
  • Additional: A portfolio of artwork may be requested at interview.

  • University degrees such as Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation, Architecture or Fashion
  • Art Foundation courses or Higher National Certificate (HNC) / Higher National Diploma (HND) in Art and Design
  • Specialist creative degrees at art schools and universities

  • Apprenticeships in creative and digital industries
  • Employment within design studios, media production or creative agencies
  • Freelance creative work within art, design or digital media
