Course content

Prepare for a career in the built environment with this two-year T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction. Developed in partnership with employers, this qualification combines classroom learning with practical industry experience through a minimum 45-day work placement. You’ll gain the technical knowledge, digital skills and professional experience needed to progress into skilled employment, higher apprenticeships or university-level study in construction, architecture or civil engineering.

During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:

  • The science behind building design, surveying and planning
  • Construction methods, materials and technologies
  • Building regulations, standards and health and safety
  • Digital engineering techniques and data management
  • Mathematical and scientific principles used in construction
  • Design processes and project planning
  • Accurate measurement, surveying and setting out
  • Sustainability and the environmental impact of construction
  • The construction industry and its role in the economy

You’ll also have the opportunity to:

  • Apply your learning during an industry placement of at least 45 days
  • Work alongside professionals in surveying, design and site management roles
  • Develop practical and digital skills using modern construction tools and software

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (or equivalent), including English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above; or successful completion of a related Level 2 qualification (normally at Merit or above, where specified).
  • Initial assessment and interview: You’ll complete any required assessments and attend an interview to confirm the right starting level.
  • Suitability: Positive attitude, strong attendance, and the ability to work safely and professionally with others.
  • English and Maths: Applicants who meet all other requirements but do not yet have the required English or Maths grade may still be considered for a place, on the condition that they study and achieve this qualification alongside their main course. Final decisions are made by the senior course leader.
  • Additional checks (if required): Some courses need a DBS check for placements; kit/uniform or professional presentation may also be required, depending on the course.
  • At least four GCSEs at grade 4+ including English and Maths; interview and school reference/attendance considered.
