Course content
Develop advanced knowledge and practical skills in mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering with this Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering. Building on your previous learning, you’ll explore a wide range of engineering principles, processes and applications while gaining the technical understanding and professional confidence needed for employment, an apprenticeship or progression to higher education.
During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:
- Engineering principles and applications
- Delivering engineering processes safely as part of a team
- Engineering product design and manufacture
- Applied commercial and quality principles
- Calculus to solve engineering problems
- Electronic devices and circuit design
You’ll also have the opportunity to:

Entry requirements
- GCSE profile: Minimum 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (or equivalent), including English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above; or successful completion of a related Level 2 qualification (normally at Merit or above, where specified).
- Initial assessment and interview: You’ll complete any required assessments and attend an interview to confirm the right starting level.
- Suitability: Positive attitude, strong attendance, and the ability to work safely and professionally with others.
- English and Maths: Applicants who meet all other requirements but do not yet have the required English or Maths grade may still be considered for a place, on the condition that they study and achieve this qualification alongside their main course. Final decisions are made by the senior course leader.
- Additional checks (if required): Some courses need a DBS check for placements; kit/uniform or professional presentation may also be required, depending on the course.
- Completion of Level 2 Engineering (Diploma/Extended Certificate) plus GCSE Maths and English at grade 4 or above; strong numeracy for technical study.
How much will this course cost?
This course is free for students aged 16-18. The course fee for adults (19+) is TBC.
