Course content
Start your journey towards a career in Plumbing with this practical, hands-on Level 1 course. You’ll gain a solid introduction to the construction industry and learn the key skills, safety standards and technical knowledge required to progress into further training or employment in the building services sector.
During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:
- Structure of the construction industry
- Fundamental safe working practices
- Environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwellings
- Site preparation and health and safety in the workplace
- Above-ground drainage systems
- Installation of copper, plastic and low-carbon steel pipework
- Repair and maintenance of basic plumbing systems
- Introduction to plumbing science and water systems
You’ll also have the opportunity to:
- Develop practical skills in a professional workshop environment
- Gain an understanding of sustainability and environmental good practice
- Work safely and effectively as part of a construction team
- Build your English and Maths skills to support your progression
- Prepare for further study at Level 2 or an apprenticeship in Plumbing or Building Services

Open Events at Newham CollegeEntry requirements
- GCSE profile: Minimum 4 GCSEs at grades 9–2 (or equivalent), including English and maths at grade 2 or above; or successful completion of a related Entry Level 3 programme.
- Initial assessment: You’ll complete an English and maths assessment so we can confirm the right starting level for your study programme.
- Suitability: A positive attitude to learning, good attendance record and the ability to work with others. For people-facing or presentation-based courses, we also expect good communication and professional personal presentation. Awareness of health and safety and readiness for practical workshop learning.
- Ongoing English and maths: You’ll continue to study English and/or maths if you have not yet achieved grade 4.
- Additional checks (where relevant): For courses with work placements (e.g., childcare/health), a DBS check may be required by the placement provider.
How much will this course cost?
This course is free for students aged 16-18. The course fee for adults is TBC.
