Course content

Build your skills and knowledge for a rewarding career working with children and young people through this Level 2 Childcare qualification. You’ll develop an understanding of how to create safe, inclusive and stimulating environments that promote children’s learning and development. This course is ideal for those aspiring to work in nurseries, schools or other early years settings.

During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:

  • Child protection and safeguarding
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in childcare settings
  • Principles and values of working with children and young people
  • Supporting positive behaviour and wellbeing
  • Activities to promote learning and development
  • Childminding and early years care practice
  • Intellectual and language development of children and young people
  • Teamwork and communication in childcare and education

You’ll also have the opportunity to:

  • Apply your learning through a two-week work placement in a childcare or early years setting
  • Develop practical skills through observations, presentations and real-world projects
  • Be assessed through coursework, case studies, reports and practical activities – there are no formal exams
  • Take part in enrichment activities such as workshops, debates and community events
  • Use independent study time to complete assignments, research and wider reading
  • Receive one-to-one tutorial support and set personal learning targets with your course tutor
  • Prepare for progression to a Level 3 qualification, apprenticeship or employment within childcare or early years education
with you to set realistic targets that will enable you to achieve. Your targets will be monitored weekly by your tutor and yourself.

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 4 GCSEs at grades 9–3 (or equivalent), including English and maths at grade 3 or above; or successful completion of a related Level 1 qualification.
  • Initial assessment and interview: You’ll complete an English and maths assessment and take part in an interview to confirm the right starting level for your study programme.
  • English and maths during your course: If you haven’t yet achieved grade 4 in English and/or maths, you’ll continue studying these alongside your main qualification.
  • Suitability: Positive attitude to learning, regular attendance, and the ability to work safely and professionally with others.
  • Placement checks (if required): For courses that include a work placement, a DBS check may be required by the placement provider.
  • Genuine interest in supporting others; DBS may be required by placement.
