Course content

Get started in the Barbering industry and develop the core skills, knowledge and confidence to launch your career. Through practical learning, you’ll explore professional techniques, products and salon practices that prepare you for progression to a Level 2 Barbering or Hairdressing course.

You’ll develop key skills such as:

  • Health and safety in the salon
  • Shampooing and conditioning
  • Men’s hair styling
  • Basic colouring techniques
  • Salon reception duties
  • Teamwork and communication

Learn from our experienced Barbering tutors in professional studios at our East Ham Campus. You’ll complete assessments on paying clients and build a portfolio of your practical and theory work. Work placements and college events will help develop your confidence and industry awareness.

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 4 GCSEs at grades 9–2 (or equivalent), including English and maths at grade 2 or above; or successful completion of a related Entry Level 3 programme.
  • Initial assessment: You’ll complete an English and maths assessment so we can confirm the right starting level for your study programme.
  • Suitability: A positive attitude to learning, good attendance record and the ability to work with others. For people-facing or presentation-based courses, we also expect good communication and professional personal presentation. Commitment to professional appearance and client care.
  • Ongoing English and maths: You’ll continue to study English and/or maths if you have not yet achieved grade 4.
  • Additional checks (where relevant): For courses with work placements (e.g., childcare/health), a DBS check may be required by the placement provider.
