Course content

Advance your technical expertise and prepare for a career as a qualified vehicle technician with this Level 3 Motor Vehicle course. Building on your previous knowledge, you’ll develop the specialist diagnostic and repair skills required to identify and resolve complex vehicle faults. The course focuses on advanced mechanical, electrical and electronic systems, giving you the confidence and competence to progress into employment, an apprenticeship or higher-level study.

During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:

  • Health and safety in the automotive environment
  • Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle chassis system faults
  • Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle transmission and driveline faults
  • Diagnosing and rectifying automotive vehicle auxiliary faults
  • Vehicle diagnostics and engine management systems
  • Introduction to low-carbon technologies in the automotive industry

You’ll also have the opportunity to:

  • Work independently on advanced diagnostic and repair projects

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (or equivalent), including English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above; or successful completion of a related Level 2 qualification (normally at Merit or above, where specified).
  • Initial assessment and interview: You’ll complete any required assessments and attend an interview to confirm the right starting level.
  • Suitability: Positive attitude, strong attendance, and the ability to work safely and professionally with others.
  • English and Maths: Applicants who meet all other requirements but do not yet have the required English or Maths grade may still be considered for a place, on the condition that they study and achieve this qualification alongside their main course. Final decisions are made by the senior course leader.
  • Additional checks (if required): Some courses need a DBS check for placements; kit/uniform or professional presentation may also be required, depending on the course.
  • Level 2 Motor Vehicle qualification and GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above; strong practical skills for workshop tasks.

How much will this course cost?

This course is free for students aged 16-18. The course fee for adults (19+) is TBC.
