About the course

This course is ideal if you are interested in engineering, design and technology, and want to develop the knowledge and skills needed for a career in the engineering sector.

During the programme, you will build a strong understanding of engineering principles while developing practical technical skills through project-based learning. You will explore how engineering is applied across a range of industries including manufacturing, construction, energy and advanced technologies.

The course combines theoretical learning with practical activities, helping you develop problem-solving, analytical and teamwork skills that are valued by employers and universities.

During the course, you’ll explore topics such as:

  • engineering principles and applied mathematics
  • mechanical and electrical engineering systems
  • engineering design and technical drawing
  • materials, manufacturing and production processes
  • health, safety and sustainability in engineering
  • the role of digital technologies in modern engineering

You’ll also have the opportunity to:

  • apply engineering theory through practical technical projects
  • develop problem-solving and analytical skills
  • work collaboratively on design and engineering challenges
  • use industry-standard equipment and digital engineering tools
  • develop the professional behaviours expected within engineering workplaces

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (or equivalent), including English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above; or successful completion of a related Level 2 qualification (normally at Merit or above, where specified).
  • Initial assessment and interview: You’ll complete any required assessments and attend an interview to confirm the right starting level.
  • Suitability: Positive attitude, strong attendance, and the ability to work safely and professionally with others.
  • English and Maths: Applicants who meet all other requirements but do not yet have the required English or Maths grade may still be considered for a place, on the condition that they study and achieve this qualification alongside their main course. Final decisions are made by the senior course leader.
  • Additional: GCSE Science is recommended for this course as it supports understanding of engineering principles and technical concepts.
