About the course

Core Maths is a Level 3 qualification studied after GCSE, usually alongside A Level subjects. While it is not an A Level or AS Level, it is the same academic level and carries the same UCAS points as an AS Level.

This one-year course is designed for students who want to continue developing their maths skills but do not need to study A Level Maths. It focuses on applying mathematics to real-life situations, helping you develop the practical problem-solving and analytical skills valued by universities and employers.

Students who complete Core Maths in Year 1 can choose to add an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) in Year 2, alongside their chosen two-year A Level subjects. This allows you to further strengthen your university application and develop research and independent learning skills.

Key topics

  • data analysis and statistics
  • financial maths and personal finance
  • probability and risk
  • mathematical modelling
  • interpreting data in real-world contexts
  • problem-solving using mathematical methods

You will

  • develop practical mathematical skills used in real-life situations
  • analyse data, statistics and numerical information
  • improve your problem-solving and analytical thinking
  • apply maths to subjects such as geography, psychology, economics and business
  • develop confidence working with numbers and quantitative information
  • gain a qualification that carries UCAS points equivalent to an AS Level
