About the course

This course is ideal if you enjoy practical work and want to develop the basic skills needed for a career in carpentry and joinery. It provides an introduction to the construction industry while helping you build confidence working with tools, materials and workshop equipment.

During the course, you will learn how carpentry is used within the construction sector and develop practical skills through hands-on workshop activities. You will learn how to measure, cut and assemble timber components while working safely in a construction environment.

The course combines practical workshop training with classroom learning, helping you develop technical skills, problem-solving abilities and teamwork while preparing you for further study in carpentry.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 4 GCSEs at grades 9–3 (or equivalent), including English and Maths at grade 3 or above; or successful completion of a relevant Entry Level qualification.
  • Initial assessment and interview: You will complete an English and maths assessment and attend an interview to confirm the right starting level.
  • Suitability: Interest in practical work, construction and working with tools.
  • English and Maths: Applicants who meet all other requirements but do not yet have the required English or Maths grade may still be considered for a place, on the condition that they study and achieve this qualification alongside their main course. Final decisions are made by the senior course leader.
  • Additional: Suitable clothing and safety footwear may be required for workshop activities.

This course is free for students aged 16-18. The course fee for adults (19+) is TBC.
