Course content
Learn from our expert Hairdressing team in professional studios at our East Ham Campus. You’ll gain hands-on experience through practical assessments on paying clients and build a portfolio showcasing your skills and knowledge.
This course provides the perfect introduction to the Hair and Beauty industry. You’ll develop essential techniques, product knowledge and confidence to progress to a Level 2 Hairdressing or Beauty course.
During the course, you’ll learn how to:
- Shampoo and condition hair
- Blow-dry and style
- Apply temporary hair colouring
- Carry out basic make-up
- Provide manicure and pedicure treatments
- Care for the skin
As part of your course, you’ll complete a work placement and take part in college events to strengthen your communication skills and professional experience.

Open Events at Newham CollegeEntry requirements
- GCSE profile: Minimum 4 GCSEs at grades 9–2 (or equivalent), including English and maths at grade 2 or above; or successful completion of a related Entry Level 3 programme.
- Initial assessment: You’ll complete an English and maths assessment so we can confirm the right starting level for your study programme.
- Suitability: A positive attitude to learning, good attendance record and the ability to work with others. For people-facing or presentation-based courses, we also expect good communication and professional personal presentation.
- Ongoing English and maths: You’ll continue to study English and/or maths if you have not yet achieved grade 4.
- Additional checks (where relevant): For courses with work placements (e.g., childcare/health), a DBS check may be required by the placement provider.
