About the course

This BTEC course gives you a strong foundation in programming, web development and cloud computing. You’ll learn how software, data and online systems work together to power modern technology and business solutions.

Through hands-on projects, you’ll design and build applications, websites and databases while developing coding, testing and problem-solving skills used by professional developers. You’ll also explore cloud platforms and cyber awareness, preparing you for the rapidly growing digital sector.

The qualification is equivalent to three A Levels and provides a clear route to university, higher apprenticeships or employment in roles such as software developer, web designer, systems analyst or cloud technician.

Entry requirements

  • GCSE profile: Minimum 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (or equivalent), including English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above; or successful completion of a related Level 2 qualification (normally at Merit or above, where specified).
  • Initial assessment and interview: You’ll complete any required assessments and attend an interview to confirm the right starting level.
  • Suitability: Positive attitude, strong attendance, and the ability to work safely and professionally with others.
  • English and Maths: Applicants who meet all other requirements but do not yet have the required English or Maths grade may still be considered for a place, on the condition that they study and achieve this qualification alongside their main course. Final decisions are made by the senior course leader.
  • Additional:
  • 5 GCSEs at 9–4 including Maths and English; strong interest in coding, web development and cloud platforms.

Progression

Courses:

  • Higher Apprenticeship in Software Development or Cloud Computing
  • Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing or Web Development
  • University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Information Systems

Other:

  • Employment as a Junior Software Developer, Web Developer, Cloud Technician, or Systems Analyst
  • Progression to freelance or entry-level roles within the digital and technology sector
