Course content

History helps us understand how the world we live in today was shaped by the events, ideas and people of the past. This course encourages debate, discussion and independent thinking while developing your research, analytical and communication skills. You’ll learn to evaluate evidence, interpret different viewpoints and build persuasive arguments based on historical understanding.

Key topics include:

  • The Origins of the English Civil War, 1603–1660
  • African Kingdoms, 1400–1800 (four case studies)
  • US Civil Rights, 1865–1992
  • Independent Investigation: Causes of the English Civil War (coursework)

You will:

  • Develop a clear understanding of historical terms, concepts and chronology
  • Explore the significance of events, individuals and societies across different periods
  • Analyse and evaluate historical sources and interpretations
  • Understand how historians construct arguments and reach conclusions
  • Take part in workshops and discussions with subject specialists
